Forum - General - 1975 Chart

The 1975 Pop-O-Meter chart continued on from 1974 and was based on what they called 'measured sales'. It was the final year for the chart with the National Sales Chart taking over in May. As with previous years there are several charts that were not published in The NZ Listener but with thanks to Dean Scapolo, I have a full set

Hi Tempest, welcome back from your holiday, I know this doesn't have anything to do with the chart, but I was just wondering if the resent earthquake in Chile had/has had any affect on New Zealand? I've heard on the news that it could affect quite a few places in the Pacific Ocean area.

Regards John.
Hi John and thanx

Hi Tempest, just a slight typo you have "Love Me Love Mt Dog", it's "Love Me Love My Dog". Also I'm a bit confused, I thought the "New Zealand Top 40" started on the 2/5/75, were there 2 charts going at the same time?

Regards John.
Hi Tempest, I just checked the "New Zealand Top 40" and Helen Ready's "Free And Easy" is at No. 1, "My Eyes Adored You" by Frankie Vallie didn't make Number 1 till the following week being the 9/5/75, again I'm confused.

Regards John.
Thanx John. Typo fixed.
To explain, there is a three week overlap in charts. It's Important to note both charts are different. I include the final three NZ Listener charts for information but the new Top 40 should take over as the main chart from 2 May. So that means on 2 May 1975 Helen Reddy has the number one single in New Zealand. Hope that clears things up.
Hi Tempest, thanks for your quick reply, that does clear it up a little the only thing I'm confused about now is on the official N.Z. chart site the 1st chart came out on 5/5/75 yet the chart that you did & the chart on this site (charts.org.nz) lists the first chart as coming out 2/5/75, so which one is correct?

Regards John.
Wow, I didn't know the official nztop40.co.nz website had updated their archive. You are right, they date the chart 5 May 1975. I have a print out of the original charts and it is definitely dated 2 May. No idea why they changed the date. To simplify things I would go with the date here on charts.org.nz as they are the originals.

Hi Tempest, according to the general forum, they've been up since 2009, as for the update I can only assume that it was done for the "40th Anniversary" of the current chart.

I'll have further questions to ask you at the end of the year, when I have time to go through both charts, as I've noticed a few differences between these charts and the official charts.

Regards John.
No worries John. I just posted them as they appeared in NZ Listener with corrections to song title and artist. I have a full set of charts from 1975 as originally printed so I should be able to help.
This is the final NZ Listener chart. The last three charts from 2 May should not be used statistically. That way a songs history can be followed without confusion. Instead, use the new National Sales Chart (now called RIANZ chart) as posted on this website.
It's taken me two years but now every chart is online from now to the beginning of 1966. I will start work on 1960 shortly, after the next two posts which I think you will find interesting.

Notes
The figures represented here are from the NZ Listener charts only.
The first chart was dated 25 March 1966 and the final from 16 May 1975 with a three week overlap into the new RIANZ charts.
A number of entries have two artists listed for the same song. These represent two different versions as listed on the chart.
The number 65 entry had a chequered history and at various times was listed by three different artists, quite often at the same time.
All song titles/artists are listed as they were on the original record label.

Hi Tempest, I want to congratulate you on the past 2 years, particularly the past 9 or 10 months, what with the charts from 1972 to 1975 which I've really enjoyed being part of my teenage years, (as I've mentioned over the past few months.)
Also the work you put in for the "40th anniversery" of the current chart, in particular "The Top 1,000" alot of great memories from my child hood, I'm sure alot of time and research has gone into compiling the charts every week.

I'm looking forward to your next project being the charts from 1960 to 1965 and then later 1956 to 1959.

Keep up the good work.

Regards John.
Thanx John. It's been a pleasure. My goal has always been to preserve these charts so other people can enjoy them too.
The plan of attack next, starting tomorrow, is to post all the Lever Hit Parade charts I have. Unfortunately the 1956 to 1959 you mentioned are missing, however I do have two of them. It will be a bit messy getting into 1960 so please bear with me. There are a lot of missing charts.
Fantastic work Tempest, very interesting reading!
Awesome work Tempest!!!!

I have thoroughly enjoyed following your threads involving these early singles charts from the start, I especially enjoyed the mid-late 60's threads... peace man...

The time and effort you have put into this is to be applauded, absolutely brilliant to say the least. Well done mate
Thanx Alley. Thanx Joe. My pleasure. I start 1960 tomorrow. I guess what would be nice now is for the 1966-1975 chart entries to be formerly added to the website.

Hi Tempest, that's quite an impressive list, however I noticed a slight typo, you have "Lolo" for the Kinks it's "Lola".

Regards

John.
Thanx John. Me and my typo's. Have a great Christmas mate.
Hi Tempest, I'm going to be away over Christmas so I won't near a computer for a few days, I'm working on some chart e facts which I hope to share with you in the New Year.

In the mean time, I want to wish you and your family as well as Warwick Freeman and his family a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year for 2017.

Regards

John.
Aww thanx John. I wish you and your lot a very merry Christmas too. Be safe, mate and enjoy your trip. If it's easier, you can email me at johnthetempest@gmail.com.
I'm going to be a bit quiet on posts here but will get some stuff up as it becomes available. New Years time is chart review time for me. I plan to post my Christmas chart on Christmas Eve along with lots of other stuff.
All the best
John T
