****** Seeing Sophie Ellis-Bextor live while on holiday in Sydney was one of the highlights of 2016 for me. Before 2015 my life did not have a lot of exciting things happening, so the songs I loved often don't have much of a connection to anything outside my love for music lists and all that nerdery. I don't really want to go back to that kind of life, because I love that I associate many songs with good memories and in particular my life events outside aforementioned chart watching and nerdery. Despite the fact that nothing from the then completely unreleased "Familia" was sung that night I saw Sophie live, numerous songs from the record have very much clicked with me and I can't help but associate them with the good memories of that night.
My trip to Sydney came at a difficult time of my life, where I was trying to juggle getting back into the routine of uni, getting over an ex flame as well as unpredictable and often damaging depression that would make me susceptible to feeling very down much of the time. My spirits were lifted while I was there, I enjoyed nearly every moment of that holiday. Even the worst moments, such as getting sunburned after bushwalking, having to rush to the airport to catch my flight back to Tassie and being mistaken for having stolen stuff from JB Hi-Fi (I had just made a silly mistake that I managed to resolve with them) were not even that bad and the last of those three just amuses me now. It's a good story to tell at least :P On the night of 4th March 2016 and into the early hours of 5th March 2016, when I saw Sophie live was one of those things which made this such a memorable time of my life. The night started off not like I expected, I was an awkward mess. The me that I hated was coming out in me, standing there, looking lost, hopeless and sad. I thought the night was going to be ruined because I couldn't have much fun, and the intoxication at first just seemed to make me overthink and stress about it even more. But as the night progressed and Sophie came on the stage, things got so much better. I got that escape that I was looking for, I managed to surrender to life and enjoy it. It became like the rest of my visit to Sydney. I'll never forget that night for the way things changed so drastically for the good.
I really liked this song based on the preview and subsequent listens of the preview made me even more excited for it and the album. I just love the explosive chorus, and the way Sophie builds up to that moment. Her voice is just angelic, while the backing vocals elevate things. Great sound to it too. It's that disco sound I really like and I'm glad she's returned to with this album. But it's not too overdone in that regard. Perfect lyrics and like "Come With Us", they just make me think of that night I saw her live and it makes me so very happy. It's just so good and I knew it would grow on me even more. I definitely surrender to this, as you can see. It's now the fifth month of 2017 and I can say I don't regret naming this my favourite song of 2016, as it has cemented itself as deserving the title even more since I completed my 2016 EOY. It continues to be a song I think of whenever I'm feeling happy and enjoying the thrills of life :D <3
